Making Hawaiian Signature Drinks At Home Can’t Be Easier

Unfortunately, due to the newly formed situation with the pandemic of Covid-19 worldwide, we are all forced to cancel our long-awaited trips to our favorite tropical destination. I must admit I was despondent when I had to cancel my trip to Hawaii, but I knew that was a responsible thing to do considering how risky and dangerous traveling is nowadays.

But that did not stop me from making my own Hawaii at home. I firmly decided to make my staycation great again by adding some tropical vibes. I tried my luck in making Hawaiian signature drinks.

Hawaiian Signature Drinks That You Should Try

Mai Tai

Mai Tai

Let's start with one of the most popular tropical cocktails of all time — a Mai Tai. Did you know that word “Maitai” is the Tahitian word for “out of this world”? Also, did you know that Mai Tai is a synonym for Tiki culture?

Mai Tai is initially a very refreshing and citrusy drink, suitable for people who dislike sweet drinks. Of course, the original recipe evolved with time, and today we already have eleven different recipes for this great drink.

But today, I will offer you the original Trader Vic's recipe that you can modify as you like.

Here's what you will need:

  • 0.75 oz aged Jamaican dark rum
  • 1.5 oz white Martinique rum
  • 1.5 oz orange Curaçao
  • 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz orgeat syrup

Add all ingredients except dark rum into the shaker over the crushed ice and shake it lightly. Pour into the Old Fashioned glass and top it off with dark rum. Garnish it with a lime wheel and mint sprig.

Blue Hawaii

Blue Hawaiian

This is an old-time classic born in 1957 in Honolulu's Kaiser Hawaiian Village. Usually, it is served on the rocks with a pineapple wedge and a cute little umbrella. Don't get confused when you see that this cocktail isn't blue at all. Keep in mind that the mixture of blue Curaçao and fresh pineapple juice creates a light tropical green color.

This color, paired with the ultimate tropical taste that comes from coconut cream, will create a much-needed tropical vibe.

There are many recipes for this oldtimer, but I will leave you this authentic recipe that I am sure you will love.

Main ingredients:

  • 0.75 oz of vodka
  • 1 oz white rum
  • 1 oz blue curaçao
  • 3 oz fresh pineapple juice
  • 1 oz sweetened coconut cream

Put all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake until well chilled. Strain it over crushed ice into Hurricane glass. Garnish it and imagine sipping this heavenly beverage on some white sand beach.

Piña colada

Pina Colada

Nothing screams tropics like this classic Hawaiian cocktail that originates from Puerto Rico.

Piña Colada, in literal translation, means strained pineapple or fresh pineapple juice, which is the main ingredient of the cocktail. This tasty drink was created by Puerto Rican pirate Robert Cofresí in the early 1800s to boost his crew's morale.

This classic cocktail sports a sweet and creamy flavor spiced up with a bit of light rum. The recipe for this fantastic drink can't be more simple.

Here is what you will need:

  • 3 parts of fresh pineapple juice
  • 1 part white rum
  • 1 part coconut cream
  • 0.5 oz of lime juice

Add all ingredients in the shaker over ice and shake it for at least 20 seconds. Strain in the Hurricane glass over pebble ice, and forget to garnish with a pineapple wedge and leaf.

Lava Flow

Lava Flow

What you might not know is that Lava Flow is a variation of 'Piña Colada'. In case you do not consume alcohol or want to serve a virgin cocktail for your kids, this drink can be served in the form of a smoothie.

I can guarantee you that this drink's flavor will leave you breathless, considering the ingredients you will use to prepare it.

You will need:

  • 1 oz of light rum
  • 1 oz of Malibu coconut rum
  • 1 small banana
  • 2 oz strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 oz coconut cream

Blend both rums in the blender with strawberries. Place this mixture in a tall mixing glass. Now blend banana, pineapple juice, and coconut cream with ice. Pour both blends in Collins glass from opposite sides, and your law lookalike cocktail is good to go.
